BCH Technical Services, LLC - Mail Configuration - Eudora 5.1+ (all operating systems)


  1. NOTE! This is a long and detailed procedure. Please have patience or you will miss a step and have to start over.
  2. Open Eudora - you must have version 5.1 or later.
  3. If you have not used Eudora before, it will immediately launch a personality configuration wizard. If this happens, click "Next" on the welcome screen and skip down these instructions to the instruction beginning with '"Account Setting" menu appears'
  4. Otherwise, to add an additional personality, click the tab with the two heads in the lower left portion of the Eudora window.
  5. Place the mouse arrow anywhere in the box above, click the right mouse button and select "New".
  6. "Account Setting" menu appears.
  7. Select "Skip directly to advanced account setup" check-circle and click "Finish".
  8. Enter a "Personality Name" that is meaningful to you for this account.
  9. Enter your first and last name in "Real Name".
  10. Enter your email address in "Return Address".
  11. Enter your login (often called 'account') in "Login Name".
  12. Enter the name of the outgoing mail host in "SMTP Server".
  13. In the "Secure Sockets when Receving" section at the bottom of this box, select "Never" from the drop-down menu.
  14. Now click the tab labeled "Incoming Mail"
  15. Enter the name of your incoming mail host in "Server".
  16. In the "Secure Sockets when Receving" section at the bottom of this box, select "Required, STARTTLS" from the drop-down menu.
  17. Click "OK".
  18. WAIT! You are NOT done yet. You must now continue the procedure you left earlier to add the root certificate to Eudora.
  19. Before you can continue, you must now make an attempt to check your mail. With your RIGHT mouse button click on the personality you just created and select "Check Mail" from the mini-menu that appears (the new personality will appear in the list of personalities under the personality tab in the box on the left side of the Eudora window).
  20. Enter your password if asked.
  21. A dialogue box will appear saying you have "No New Mail". Click "OK". (the status/log box at the bottom of the Eudora window in some versions of Eudora will display an error related to "SSL" - this is what you will fix in the next steps).
  22. Once again, click your RIGHT mouse button on the personality you just created and select "Properties" from the mini-menu.
  23. Click the "Incoming Mail" tab on the window that appears.
  24. Near the bottom-right of that window, click the "Last SSL Info" button.
  25. A window appears entitled "Eudora SSL Connection Information Manager".
  26. Near the bottom of that window, click "Certificate Information Manager".
  27. A window appears entitled "Certificate Information Manager".
  28. Close to the bottom of that window, click "Import Certificate".
  29. In the "Open" window that appears, select your "Desktop" folder if it is not already open.
  30. Click on the file entitled "ca.cer" and click "Open".
    NOTE! If you did not follow the procedure to fetch the root certificate, this file will not appear. If you saved it to folder other than the desktop, you will need select that folder before the "ca.cer" file will appear in the list of choices.
  31. When the "Certificate Information Manager" window re-appears, click "Done".
  32. When the "Eudora SSL Connection Information Manager" window re-appears, click "OK".
  33. When the "Account Settings..." window re-appears, click "OK".
  34. You may need to restart Eudora at this point. You are done!
